Impact of electronic alternatives to tobacco cigarettes on indoor air particular matter levels

    Get PDF
An aerosol study was carried out in a test room measuring particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 10, 4, 2.5 and 1 m (PM10, PM4, PM2.5, PM1) before and during the use of electronic alternatives to tobacco cigarettes (EATC) IQOS®, GLO®, JUUL®, with dierent kinds of sticks/pods, as well as during the smoking of a conventional tobacco cigarette. The aerosol was mainly in the PM1 size range (>95%). All studied EATCs caused lower indoor PM1 concentrations than conventional tobacco cigarettes. Nevertheless, they determined a worsening of indoor-PM1 concentration that ranged from very mild for JUUL®—depending on the pod used—to considerably severe for IQOS® and GLO®. Median values ranged from 11.00 (Iqos3 and Juul2) to 337.5 g m3 (Iqos4). The high variability of particle loadings was attributed both to the type of stick/pod used and to the dierent way of smoking of volunteers who smoked/vaped during the experiments. Moreover, during vaping IQOS® and GLO® indoor PM1 concentrations reach levels by far higher than outdoor concentrations that range from 14 to 21 g m3, especially during the exhalation of the smoke. From these results emerge an urgent need of a legislative regulation limiting the use of such devices in public places

Characterizing Docker Overhead in Mobile Edge Computing Scenarios

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is an emerging network paradigm that provides cloud and IT services at the point of access of the network. Such proximity to the end user translates into ultra-low latency and high bandwidth, while, at the same time, it alleviates traffic congestion in the network core. Due to the need to run servers on edge nodes (e.g., an LTE-A macro eNodeB), a key element of MEC architectures is to ensure server portability and low overhead. A possible tool that can be used for this purpose is Docker, a framework that allows easy, fast deployment of Linux containers. This paper addresses the suitability of Docker in MEC scenar- ios by quantifying the CPU consumed by Docker when running two different containerized services: multiplayer gam- ing and video streaming. Our tests, run with varying numbers of clients and servers, yield different results for the two case studies: for the gaming service, the overhead logged by Docker increases only with the number of servers; con- versely, for the video streaming case, the overhead is not affected by the number of either clients or servers.Comment: 6 Pages, 9 images, 2 table

Performance Analysis of C-V2I-Based Automotive Collision Avoidance

One of the key applications envisioned for C-V2I (Cellular Vehicle-to-Infrastructure) networks pertains to safety on the road. Thanks to the exchange of Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAMs), vehicles and other road users (e.g., pedestrians) can advertise their position, heading and speed and sophisticated algorithms can detect potentially dangerous situations leading to a crash. In this paper, we focus on the safety application for automotive collision avoidance at intersections, and study the effectiveness of its deployment in a C-V2I-based infrastructure. In our study, we also account for the location of the server running the application as a factor in the system design. Our simulation-based results, derived in real-world scenarios, provide indication on the reliability of algorithms for car-to-car and car-to-pedestrian collision avoidance, both when a human driver is considered and when automated vehicles (with faster reaction times) populate the streets. This work was partially supported by TIM through the research contract “Multi-access Edge Computing”, and by the European Commission through the H2020 5GTRANSFORMER project (Project ID 761536

Edge-based Collision Avoidance for Vehicles and Vulnerable Users

    Get PDF
Collision avoidance is one of the most promising applications for vehicular networks, dramatically improving the safety of the vehicles that support it. In this paper, we investigate how it can be extended to benefit vulnerable users, e.g., pedestrians and bicycles, equipped with a smartphone. We argue that, owing to the reduced capabilities of smartphones compared to vehicular on-board units, traditional distributed approaches are not viable, and that multi-access edge computing (MEC) support is needed. Thus, we propose a MEC-based collision avoidance system, discussing its architecture and evaluating its performance. We find that, thanks to MEC, we are able to extend the protection of collision avoidance, traditionally thought for vehicles, to vulnerable users without impacting its effectiveness or latency

Ruolo del citrato nel metabolismo osseo

Citrate is an organic compound involved in tricarboxylic acid cycle, regulation of acid-base balance, lipid metabolism and bone formation. The 90% of body citrate is deposited in bone tissue and is released with calcium ions during bone resorption; therefore, bone resorption contributes to maintain normal plasma levels of citrate together with kidney excretion. The parallel release of citrate and calcium from bones decreases the possibility of calcium-phosphate precipitation in soft tissues, as citrate can bind calcium ions in organic fluids. Citrate may also take part to the bone formation as it sustains the correct mineralization of bone organic matrix: its molecule binds calcium ions at the surface of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals and maintains the correct spatial disposition of nanocrystals, thus, stabilizing the structure of bone lamellae and sustaining biomechanical characteristics of bone tissue. Multiple studies observed that citrate administration significantly increased areal and volumetric bone mineral density at different locations of 1-2% per year and improved bone resorption markers as well. Therefore, it has been hypothesised a therapeutic role of citrate in osteoporosis; however, this role has to be better clarified to understand its real anti-fracture effect

Poster: A Simulation-based Testbed for Vehicular Collision Detection

This paper presents a simulation-based testbed for the study of collision detection in vehicular networks. We combine the Omnet++ discrete-event simulator with the SUMO mobility simulator and the SimuLTE framework, in order to study an intersection scenario where the road-side unit also integrates a collision detector. Through this set of tools, we are able to simulate the exchange of cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) and collision alerts, and evaluate the timeliness with which the latter are received. This work is partially supported by TIM through the research contract “Multi-access Edge Computing”, and by the EC through the H2020 5G-TRANSFORMER project (Project ID 761536)

investigation on the behavior of pesticides in atmosphere

    Get PDF
Although pesticides are widely used in agriculture, they and in particular the relative residues in foodstuffs, water and atmosphere, may cause remarkable sanitary problems due to the harmful effects (carcinogenic and mutagenic effects) on the human health. In fact, their spread in waters and atmosphere can produce undesired effects on various organisms and/or water contamination. This paper shows an analytical approach based on XAD-2 adsorbent and GC analysis for evaluating the pesticide trend in atmosphere: in particular, the pesticides investigated are omethoate, dicrotofos, disulfoton, dimethoate, parathion methyl, formothion, paraoxon ethyl, malaoxon, parathion ethyl, iodofenfos and triazofos. For the analytical methodology a linearity response was obtained (r^2 = 0.9988) in GC-NPD whereas the limits of detection range between 2 and 5 pg/ÎĽL in GC-NPD with a Relative Standard Deviation below 9.5. Finally, this approach has been successfully applied to real samples: the results show that dimethoate concentration decreases with increasing distance from the sampling site but it is still persistent in atmosphere after few days from the pesticide spraying
